random people on the tram
an encounter with someone on the tram speaking German and English
Hey guys!
Yesterday I had one of those random encounters that can actually kinda make your day.
After work Joana and I went with Barča for coffee/tea in this hipster-y bar next to the opera house - it was kinda expensive but very very delicious. We had cake there as well and stayed until we got uncomfortable, looked on the watch and realized that this store closed ten minutes ago.
Anyway, on mine and Joana’s way home we sat in the tram, talked (maybe a little bit too loud) and all of the sudden a maybe 70 year old guy turns around and asks us whether we are from Britain or the US. Well, obviously Joana said she’s from Portugal and I said I’m from Germany. Just in that moment this man started to talk in German to me, apparently he visited ten German cities and was very interested in how a Portuguese and a German come to be in Ostrava, moreover he complimented on our English saying that it was very fluent and sounded like a native speaker’s (which I doubt very much, but it’s still a nice compliment).
To wrap this all up, I’m very happy that there are people here who speak another language than Czech and maybe Russian, it was so random and surprising, but also a nice conversation on the way home.
And it made me feel kinda guilty for not speaking Czech a little bit better at this point.
