Pizza Night
Story of five international volunteers put under quarantine in the middle of Italy
Chapter 6
Pizza Night
The wonderful smell of pizza...
10:05 Nana measured her temperature, while Giuseppe was playing the piano.
Finally we could enjoy our shelves full of fruit and vegetables. In the same time, our social contacts did not exist. We wanted to make our life happy again.
That is how we came up with the idea of pizza.
However, we did not have enough ingredients and we could not leave the house. The situation seemed to be hopeless, but we did not want to give up.
“We will order it in coronavirus way” said Sandra.
After many discussions, in the late evening, we selected our pizzas. We gathered in the kitchen, while Nana was calling the pizzeria. For those few minutes, fear of coronavirus was less important than fear of not having the Italian dish.
“Our plan worked” informed us Nana, breathing a sigh of relief.
Pizza.. Thin dough, melted mozzarella, aromatic vegetables. At 19:00 our dish should be at the house.
18:49 Giuseppe started to play the piano.
Nana and Lina were observing the streets from the balcony, waiting for the delivery man.
19:01 Nothing.
19:03 Our hands started to shake with impatience.
19:06 Sandra opened the window in the kitchen and looked at the girls.
“There he is!” screamed Lina.
Sandra looked over, down the street from the window. A man was carrying our pizzas.
Then she looked back at the balcony, but girls had disappeared.
“Now, we need to implement our plan” she said and looked back at the delivery man.
***
Could you imagine his face when we asked to leave our pizzas in front of the door? Is our lovely Margherita worth being next to the trash bin? He was extremely surprised... Maybe scared? who knows!.. Sandra, the bravest among us, collected all the cash that we had in our house. She put it into a small box. The delivery man, ready to get his money, was waiting under our window.
It took Sandra several seconds to throw the box down.
With wide open eyes, using all his sportive talent, the man caught it.
After he went away, Sandra closed the windows and went downstairs.
Thanks to her, we had a real Italian dinner...
