March and April
An insight into my first 6-7 weeks in Tartu, Estonia, working in AHHAA science center. (Written on April 11th)
It's been a while now since I arrived in Tartu and I still remember how even after just 5 days I felt like I had been there for several weeks already. In my first couple of days I got to know AHHAA and I met lots and lots of people. I've heard probably 20 new names on each of my first few days in the science centre (its whole name is actually Teaduskeskus AHHAA which means Science centre AHHAA and ahhaa is the sound that you make when you understand something). But by now I know most of the people and I've actually shared talks even with some people that I don't work with directly. I don't know if it's an Estonian thing or an AHHAA thing, but it's happened to me a couple times that at the first meeting I thought that some people didn't want anything to do with me and it made me prefer other people. But then later on we talked to each other and it turned out that they're actually really great and nice and I just interpreted their behavior as something that it wasn't. When actually they were just being a bit shy and reserved!
At the moment I am working as a guide in AHHAA, which means that I turn everything on in the morning and off at night and I take care of the halls during the day. We also help the visitors and make sure everything stays on one piece and especially dry... we have a waterworld and a waterwall! A couple of times so far I got to do some demo-experiments where I do some easier experiments in the halls, explain how everything works and also have people come up to help and be a volunteer. I can also watch any workshops or science shows that I want to see. Like this, I will hopefully be able to do some workshops myself soon!
At the beginning of this week I moved to a different flat in my dorm and my new place is for 8 instead of just 4 girls, so the kitchen is much bigger, it even has a window!
Yesterday we had a game night and (with help! :) ) I made some Pretzels and waffles and we all enjoyed them while playing cool games.
At the moment I'm on my way to Tallinn to meet my friend Bea and tomorrow my arrival-orientation will start which I'm very much looking forward to! :)
