How to adjust to a new environment
Adapting to a new country comes with many challenges and opportunities. Here's how to cope.
My take on living in a completely different space and loving it:
Learning to say "Yes"
Spontaneity has become my new best friend. Coming from a country that loves to schedule everything (at least) two weeks ahead to one that pretty much just does things, has been something I had to adapt to. In a pleasent way. Experiencing so many wonderful things without even expecting to and knowing at the start of the day, that I have no idea what will happen to me is refreshing. It takes the stress out of everything, the worrying about time periods and schedules and appointments. Georgia has a 'go with the flow' type of culture, I had to let loose and free myself from structure.
Learning to say "No" too sometimes
My everyday life here never gets boring. I never run out of things to do, it's quite the opposite, really. Heading from one fun event to the next. Meeting with friends, going to cafes, working in the office, going for a walk around the city, having a drink in good company, driving to another town. Sometimes that can be somewhat overwhelming. From one day to the next, my entire life was turned around and I had to adjust to an entirely new way of living. That can be stressful, my body and mind needed time to process everything and I have to learn to give that time to it. Sometimes you need to cancel some plans to be able to enjoy the next ones to the fullest.
Appreciating otherness
Georgians have a crazy driving style and honk at each other for no visible reason. They don't order a plate for themselves when going out to eat, they order a lot of food for everyone to take from. They love their country and want you to get to know it too. They love to drink and make the best toasts. They don't care much about time and are always late. They give out love and friendship without limits and are not scared to start conversations with strangers.
In short, there are many attitudes I am not used to but being open to that gave me the opportunity to learn from it and realize that my way of living was not necessarily the norm. Rejecting foreign ideas from the beginning would make me live within the walls I've always known forever.
This is a great opportunity to learn, this is my call to make the most of it.
