Declaration of Love
Spain (or Espain as Spanish people would pronounce) is more than a country for me, it became my home – my soap bubble...
I will never forget the moment when I walked up the stairs…darkness turned into light! The announcement in the metro was: próxima estación: sol. I arrived on the sun! La puerta del sol was light-flooded and did credit to its name. I turned my head towards the blue sky, while watching the huge and majestic buildings, I felt so small, the first thought that came into my mind was: “wow you live here now…wow you live here!” This is how my love story begun, at that time I didn’t know that it will last for years and apparently for a lifetime. As you can imagine my first time on Spanish soil was in the core of the country, its capital Madrid. I lived there as an Erasmus Student for half a year (livin’ la vida loca). Madrid and me we were one – deeply in love, spending all day long together, walking around, getting lost, discovering places and trying new things. Already in the first days I had the pleasure to meet real madrileños and to experience both how dead fast and loudly they speak. When you are in a club it’s almost impossible to listen to the music because Spanish People are talking and talking and keep talking and talking (yes you can generalize!). Also my vocabulary expanded quickly with tío,tía which means uncle, aunt but used as a slang word dude or chick. And the ones who think that puta madre is a bad word they don’t know Spain yet! My self-confidence was increasing when I was called guapa (beautiful girl), but after some time I had to realize that they say it to everybody.Of course I went for tapas and cañas (small beer) and gaining Spanish Kilos … Spain is guilty as charged: too much delicious food! In the meantime I visited more parts of the Iberian Peninsula and every region is so different from the other but all of them are charming in their own way!
My path (or my destiny?) has led me back, but this time in the green part in the northwest of the country: La España verde- named Galicia, to be more exact to the spiritual city Santiago de Compostela! So I’m dancing at Foliadas (be careful not follada!), eating pulpo (octopus) and empanadas (Spanish patty filled with meat, fish or vegetables), watching the Atlantic Ocean from the end of the world, pilgriming on the Camino de Santiago and enjoying my experience as a European Volunteer (this time with Erasmus+) in this enchanting part of Spain.
España captured me, and every time when I have to leave, I know that I will miss not only the country but also the person I am at this place! But this is never a good-bye, it’s a ¡hasta pronto!
