Art in Budapest
Budapest, an undervalued city full of culture, art and magic.
What a beautiful city! When I think about Budapest I feel like an elder woman looking at pictures from her youthfulness. It gives me great nostalgia. I miss even the hard winter deciding if I could go outside in -10 degrees instead to stay at home watching a movie. Probably I don’t miss the cold, I miss the feeling such a brave soldier before the war starts. I would like to smell again the art in all surrounding. Budapest is art, it is beauty, it is such a beautiful woman without any make up. It is natural and sophisticate in the same time. It is magical.
When I talk about art I’m not just contemplating the known art which we are used to see in a museum. I’m going farther than the specific artistic social areas. You can find art in every corner you walk, you can breathe it because art is part of the atmosphere. This is exactly how Budapest made me feel, alive.
First time I saw the Danube at night it was almost impossible not to fall in love. I didn’t want to research any information related with this city before leaving my native country. Then, when I arrived in Budapest at 11pm I was completely fascinated. My coordinator from EVS came to pick me up. We followed the Danube for 15 minutes. We passed up all the bridges, all the lights, all the famous buildings. “Why didn’t I know the existence of this place before?”. I though while I felt very disappointed with myself because of my ignorance. But I didn’t know anything yet. Maybe it could be just a mask, pretty from outside but nasty inside, with no soul, no culture, no reason to stay. Yes, I was wrong, completely wrong as you can guess.
All the time you can find artistic events around the city, also there are many places where you can share with other people your passions or interest. It is such a perfect place where you can express yourself finding the inspiration you need for it. There are many art exhibitions in Budapest. Much more I could never imagined. Once I visited one of the biggest exhibition I had never seen in my whole life. The local where it took place was a big building not so far from the center. It was open for two weeks and the ticket entrance was for free. Many painters, photographers and sculptors exhibited their artistic works. After three hours, I had just seen half of the exhibition. One of them took my attention, it was a several photography’s which different people appeared in their houses with water around everywhere, like an inundation. People from different cultures and races were flooded by water to the knees, it didn’t matter if they were rich or poor, if they were good or bad people. It was very meaningful to me, showing me what it means equality and justice. In the end, we are the same. It was just my perception. That´s art, something you need to figure out what it means, what makes you feel. Nobody can tell you if you are right or wrong, because everyone has their own truth.
Furthermore, a part of the massive scale events, there are many others not so well-known. Once per year there is an art festival around the city. The most attractive initiative was a kind of route visiting curious exhibition around the whole city (both indoor and outdoor). They were small companies, even independent ones. The wonderful bohemian streets full of beauty joined with modest exhibition from different art approach. It was a perfect function.
However, Budapest can offer more, much more. Any kind of event, celebration or interest topic that you are thinking about I’m sure you will find there. Such a live music concerts, social-cultural workshops, ecological awareness activities, theatre in alternative locals, gastronomic festivals, second-hand markets or wine special taste in medieval cattle.
Lifestyle in Budapest is unique and authentic. Perfect places for artist people. Perfect places for people who want an intense life. Simply beautiful.
