All we take for granted
A wonder of a world.
When being born into the society, we are, if we believe the novel “Sophie´s World”, still able to recognize the wonders that surround us whether it might be the barking dog on the other side of the street or the campfire during one of the garden parties.
When being young, we not only recognize these wonders, but we also never stop to question. However, the older we get the more we lose this ability. Saying it with the words by Jostein Gaarder “… as [we] grow older [we] work [our]selves even deeper into the fur.”, we start to get comfy and customize ourselves to the surroundings we live in.
Only the one who is able to never stop wondering is the true philosopher, states it in “Sophie´s World”.
That also means that we not only stop questioning our surroundings but also the system we live in. We stop to see the magic in our behaviour. Although human beings are depicted often enough as cruel creatures, I would like to look more on the positive side of things.
We are living in a system where everything is built up on honesty. People are supposed to live an honest life as they were taught, and everything depends on this honesty as one of the most important values in life. Where would the police be if not some people would be honest? Where would our state be if we wouldn´t be honest?
Of course, now some of you might argue, that the state and government hold a certain amount of power in their hands as they use punishments as a mean to achieve their ends. Looking at it more closely, we see however a flaw, if no one would participate in this system, they wouldn´t have this power. This at the end, only works because we work together, because we believe humans having a sense of what is right and what is wrong.
Now it might be argued further that this only works due to the raising we got when we were younger, because we are taught from child onwards what are the rules, what we can do and what we can´t.
But let´s don´t forget, we were the ones to develop that system. So, it is definitely a wonder that there are not more people killing others and that after all the majority of people are good. That we find so rarely a person being really evil but moreover a product of their experience.
We take it for granted that we have love surrounding us whereas us being cruel and rude and spreading hatred could have been a thing.
We take it for granted that we have food to nourish us whereas it might have as well been the case that we have to survive on our own.
We take it for granted that we have education and are able to increase our knowledge whereas no one might as well have cared to educate anyone.
We take it for granted that there are enough people following a good sense of right and wrong for this system to work out whereas there might have been as well only chaos, destruction and death instead.
We take it for granted that we have the opportunity to live on this planet whereas the humankind could have been became extinct ages ago.
We take all this for granted whereas without our ancestors and people standing up for their rights, we would have never come so far.
Without realising we live in a society that builds on the saying “One four all and all for one.” We live in a society made of solidarity. We live in a society with the right intentions.
Of course, there’s is always going to be evil on this world and humans will still be a paradox on their own. But that we have come so far: IS A WONDER.
And we should not take it for granted.
