Where are EU humanitarian values?
Last year when I was doing my volunteering year (ESC) I listened and learned about Europeanvalues in the scope of various youth exchange trainings and seminars that we had constantly. And during these seminars more than ever I was convinced that the EU is a huge institution for theeducation of humanitarian values like solidarity, anti-descrimination and human rights as basic needs of human beings, all over the world. Right now I have an opportunity not to listen but also to see all of these values in an action. And I am going to disappoint you, because there is nothing impressional to share with you.
It is November the 5th. Since over a month I wake up every morning with the discouraging and terrific news about the war that is being carried out in my homeland Armenia/ Artsakh. And the only question that I am asking myself now is: where are these EU humanitarian values that they were teaching me
and thousands of youth workers, from different parts of the world? I am sure they are going
to continue to teach about this theoretical humanity.
I would like to get a clear picture of this huge institutive activity because the intention and contradictory thoughts that I have right now makes me think
that I am either naive or I didn't clearly get what EU values are. To be more precise: have you ever read about the priority of this institution? Don’t be lazy please search and
read. There is written: One of the priorities for the EU is protecting civilians and freedoms. As
well as fighting againts terrorism, cross border and online crime. Well I wish I had found
absolutely the opposite arguments, but it is what it is. Right now in Artsakh people
are fighting for their extension in their homeland againts terrorism. Just a few days ago I got a
message saying that my course friend was killed by Azeris while being on his mission protecting home. And he is not the only one, there are a hundreds of innocent people just 18 years old who are becoming a victim of a torture by modern technologies and weapons, even chemical weapon that are internationally forbidden. I am not even sure what it means for something being internationally forbidden, is there anything that is really forbidden by barbarians? The worst thing is that there are not only young soldiers becoming victims, but also peaceful civilians and residents, same as civilian infrastructure that is being bombed and attacked constantly and the fire still continues in Artsakh.
Now let’s pass this emotional part and see what we can do to avoid and to stop this inhumanity.
What can each of us do to stop this terrorism and genocide policy of Turkey, that is going to
become a scourge for everybody if we continue to pretend that nothing happens.
You know? it turns out that we don’t have to attempt a lot of effort to stop this war. We just need
to speak, just not be indifferent as are many European and international humanitarian
institutions. And the thing is that we don't have to speak just for speaking and only condemning
or calling both sides to stop the fighting. We need to speak about the truth. Let’s just one time
speak about the truth, don't be superficial. Let’s just one time be fair and courageous. Let’s stop being only theoretical, to act practical, and proof of the respect of our own values that we have
set up. Let’s just one time in history wipe away personal and beneficial principals, just one time
be honest and raise the voice of the truth. Isn't it possible?
You may say, that I am less informed, that the EU and all other humanitarian institutions are
acting, but you know what, they are just condemning and calling to stop. They don't do more because they have not to worry about the thousands of human beings lifes who are still hopefully
waiting for fairness. They are worrying about their financial and economical sustainability.
You may say, now nobody worries about this war because of the pandemic situation and global
changes that are happening in different parts of the world. I agree, but please let me know why
they are so sensitive for Koalas that are burning in Australian bushfires. In this case they are not busy with economical and financial problems in the world? Aren’t they worried about the current pandemic situation?. Of course they are. But I don't really understand why when it's all
about profits and beneficial issues everybody becomes blind and nobody is able to see and
react somehow against the inhumanity and abuse of human beings. And what? After all of
this, people that are working in EU institutions are going to do their everyday work and
confidently speak about human rights and humanity. Don't they feel dishonest?
You know what, after all of this I will suggest you to come to Armenia, or just follow fact
news and see real humanity and respect for human rights. You will see that our doctors cured and saved the lifes of enemy soldiers, not killing and cutting their heads as they do with our soldiers. And
please don’t think it is just a patriotic or dramatic description. Come and get to know real
humanity, probably you will become a bit humanitarian and you will stop speaking about bullshit.
By the way, if some of my armenian friends read my story, she/he will call me to stop thinking
about help or response from outside. Because we learned to be ourselves, without hoping for
anything from anybody. I just would like to invite my international friends to stay attentive, to question
whatever they are learning and spreading around the word and how
artificial it may be. Who knows, maybe they also will have such a situation, just to keep in mind don;t
have an expectation from anybody. And as you know terrorism is like a virus. It does not know
any nationality, religion or peace of civilians. It comes at once and spreads very quickly. The
difference is, that in virus cases we do hope to be saved, while terrorism is killing without
preconditions.
