When I am with you I feel like heaven is all around me
I was in Erasmus in Bad Gleichenberg, Austria. I never lived in a dormitory before. I was excited and curious to experience the common life. To tell the truth I was full with fears and I really don’t know how to share my room with a stranger.
Arriving to my prospective room my flatmate welcomed me. She was a Turkish girl, called Hale. I was extremely tired and really stressful as my suitcases were missing. I was not able to speak with her and I can say the first impression was not the best from each side.
We have tough time at the beginning as our lifestyle was so different. She was watching movies and typing on the computer till the morning… We didn’t know the common language well, communication was a little bit limited. We were shy and we thought the other is a really strange person… This is how we spent the first weeks… We sat next to each other and just spoke about the necessary things.
Then suddenly everything radically changed. I had a phone call from home that my grandfather died. I remember I was sitting in my bed and she was in her. I started to cry and yelled in my deep pain. I was shocked and out of myself. I don’t know what happened after just that she came and hugged me. I will never forget it. I started to pack immediately and at the same day I travelled back to Hungary.
We stayed in continuous contact and when I strengthened enough to continue my studies in abroad she was standing at the station and waiting for me coming back. She drew me a piece of paper which portrayed me and her with a title “Welcome to home”.
I felt a tug at my heartstrings and slowly we became friends. We opened to each other. We started to talk. She told me some secrets from her life and me also. We couldn’t stop it. We realized that we have a lot in common. After that, we had a great time, we did many things together. We went out for dinner and shopping together. We made crazy photos, cook and tasted the other’s food. We were walking in the rain, party and dance. Study for the exams writing notes and laugh. In one word: we lived.
