The essence of Solidarity
What I believe solidarity means in the sense of society and in practice.
It took until today's university lecture on political communication for inspiration to hit in terms of this essay. Solidarity means everyone just working together to achieve the same interest to me. Obviously, that is the definition of the word but I could not manage to phrase what I envision it as on a practical level until two hours ago.
With so many different movements and activisms constantly happening everywhere as it seems on the media, it is easy to fall under the impression that people are constantly migrating between groups and no one is truly loyal to one or the other. There are abolishments of labels, the eruption of political organisations from the centre, and all traditions are being forcefully forgotten about. However, solidarity still stands; unity of mankind is still as prominent as it was at any point in history. Maybe just the labels have changed.
If we are to view things from an objectively scientific perspective, detached of our personality and emotions, our world would resemble something of a big brain. Just like a brain has nerves sending signals to different parts of it and the body, so too people exchange information and energy, keeping the metaphorical blood of humanity pumping. In complete essence, are all the same, we are all human and we all want the same things - depicted in Maslow's pyramid. The only difference being is how we perceive these necessities. To one, safety could equal to having a family and to another - a stable climate. These are all determined by the situation and purpose of the previously phrased transmitters.
However, we often forget our instinctual, primitive basicality under the impression that we are no longer the cavemen we once were and have sophistication and progressive knowledge. Which I agree with on some level but stress the grandeur our basic instincts play in our decisions. When put under some stress, the body panics and begins to pour adrenaline and sweat - as though some simple progressive conversation cannot extinguish the situation. It is as though we truly believe that violence will bring about understanding and peace much like curling into a ball will heal our problems. These are optimistic yet not so effective, ways of approaching complications. However, we still live by these self-centered impulses in one way or another.
We have approached a stage in average global intellectuality that we can logically suss these problems out and put measures in to deplete these problems and allow us to focus our time on trying to develop. There is no need for severe survival anymore, so why are people creating extreme situations? Could we realise that there is nothing left to fear and begin to work in solidarity? Why is there a need to create conflict now?
Those questions bring me to my vision of what solidarity is. We no longer need to be afraid of each other and highlight differences and views to segregate us or others. Instead, solidarity is understanding these differences and realising that they are, in objective terms, advantages in one situation or another. No neuron or nerve has the same job otherwise, there would be no point for duplicates, right? Each one is invented specifically to do its singular job well and together they create a moving and talking body able to achieve amazing things as has been proven through decades and centuries. Each one is an individual and all these individuals collaborate together in idealistic unison to achieve more. That is solidarity.
