"Let's live in the countryside" initiative
In the first month of my ESC project, I had to research how village citizens around the world are improving their living conditions through innovation and management. Here is another excellent example from Mongolia.
Rural Reform and Development Partnership (RRDP) NGO was established in October 2020, in order to support migration from the city to the countryside in Mongolia. NGO works with like-minded citizens and organizations with a vision to contribute to reforming national development policies and concepts and building a strong society based on human development.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE? WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO SOLVE?
Significant migratory flows to cities from the countryside. Long-distance migration from the cities to rural areas is declining. The extent of rural poverty, caused by factors such as lack of employment and opportunities, limited access to services and infrastructure, and conflicts over natural resources and land prevent people from making such a move.
HOW ARE THEY SOLVING THESE ISSUES?
Migration for development project
RRDP’s objective is to find solutions for village development and promote urban-rural migration, strengthen urban-rural friendships and partnerships, and divert migration-oriented investment to economically viable sectors.
- Help new migrants and prospective migrants to resolve issues such as land planning, land ownership, settlement, and infrastructure with local governments.
- Find opportunities to support new migrants in financing real estate and business in the village.
Education
RRDP’s objective is to teach future generations to know and understand environmental issues so that they will love and protect them. By diversifying general education and giving each child a choice, they will be able to discover their interests and develop together.
- The secondary schools of Khutag-Undur have the opportunity to create their advantages and features by specializing in environmental and agricultural elective programs.
- Inviting professionals in the field of environment and agriculture to train villagers and to allow them to live, work and do business in their home town.
Eco town
RRDP’s objective is to develop a local, sustainable and ecological agriculture capable of providing a cluster of vegetables.
- WOMEN IN KHUTAG-UNDUR GROW MUSHROOMS. Collaborated with the Women's Council of Khutag-Undur and launched an initiative to support local women's entrepreneurship by introducing mushroom cultivation.
- LET'S SEPARATE WASTE AT HOME. Professionals provided advice and information on improving waste management in Khutag-Undur . They said that solid waste needs to be sorted at the source, and citizen participation and initiative are most important. Local people and herders have expressed strong support for this initiative.
Meat cluster
RRDP’s objective is to create a cluster of businesses based on cattle farm and beef production in Khutag-Undur.
- Work with Xanadu Razorbak LLC that operates intensified cattle farm and feedlot in Khutag-Undur since 2009. The company supplies the highest quality beef to end-users in Mongolia.
- Meet with representatives of industries related to the production, sale and export of meat and meat products and find an answer to the development solution
- Cooperate with the research universities like the School of Economics of the National University of Mongolia and the School of Animal Husbandry and Biotechnology of the University of Agriculture to create the strategy for sustainable livestock and pasture management, as well as better livestock products value.
