How I studied free in Budapest: Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship

The Hungarian Government Scholarship provides free tuition, accommodation, health insurance and monthly living allowance for bachelor, master and doctoral studies in Hungary.

I received the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship in 2018 to study MBA program at the prestigious Corvinus University of Budapest. This scholarship is mostly for students from developing countries like Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Please check the participating countries from its official website.

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program is announced on November 15 of each year and the admission period ends on January 15. Scholarships from the Hungarian Government include:

Tuition fee 100%
Payment for dormitory (if you rent an apartment, you will receive EUR 100 per month. This is not enough to rent a room, so you will have to pay an additional 110–150 EUR by yourself )
Monthly living expenses (Bachelor's and Master's EUR 130, Doctor EUR 325. Bachelor's and Master's EUR 130 are not enough for my living. If you eat a lot, have fun from time to time, and go to entertainment, you will have to spend an additional 100–150 EUR per month. Well, for doctoral students, the scholarship will be enough.
Health insurance (TAJ, state insurance covers even Dental and STIs, while private insurance such as UNIQA, even if a person is about to die, only sees a doctor a week later)

Application materials for the scholarship:

Online application (Personal information, education, work experience, language skills, health status, hobbies, etc. in English. Letter of motivation
Language test scores (There are so many English programs. Language requirements depend on the university's criteria. Most universities require an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. There is probably a separate test for studying in the Hungarian language.)
Letters of recommendation (Generally, there are two letters of recommendation. One from the previous university's professor, one from the boss. It's very flexible in the selection process, but if you want to pass, it's better to meet all the requirements. I heard they don't even get letters from undergraduate students.)
Copies of previous school diplomas and transcripts (certified translation into the language of instruction. Our university required all students to have their diplomas certified by Apostille.)
Medical examination result
Passport
Research plan (Applies to doctors only)
Artwork / Portfolio (Applies to art students only)

In general, the above materials must be compiled and uploaded to the online application. No paper will be accepted. You can also apply even if some materials are incomplete. For example, if a high school graduate is waiting for his or her graduation certificate, graduation diploma, language score, or passport to be issued, he or she may submit it incomplete and send it later when you receive these documents.

Selection

Let's say we have submitted our materials before January 16. In the second half of February, the Tempus Public Foundation (a Hungarian selection agency) reviews the submissions and sends a list of students with no problem materials to each county's sending partners.
Before the end of March, the sending partners will review the applications from Hungary, select students who are eligible for scholarships and transfer them back to the Tempus Public Foundation. The sending partner will publish a list of shortlisted students on its website.
Students who pass the first round will be accepted by the Tempus Public Foundation in early April.
From April to June, you will take exams and online interviews at the two universities of your choice. Our MBA program had an interview with the selected applicants.
From the beginning of June, you will receive the final results of your first school. If you don't pass the first school's exam, you will have to wait for the next university's exam. If you don't qualify for either, it's a no for this year.
From July, when your invitation arrives, you will start applying for a visa.
