Europe is more than a promise!
What can we do to make the european idea more attractive?
Europe is a promise. Democracy and liberty, along with peace and prosperity are the promises made by the west. All of these factors create an attractive circumstances to live in. Currently people in Ukraine wave flags to demonstrate their affiliation to Europe and to underline their consent of European values. We are living on the bright side of life – and for the most part we do not recognise this.
Our polls for the European elections are low, newspapers hardly reporting from conferences or successful diplomatic agreements. The differences between the European Parliament and the European Commission are not well known; who knows who José Manuel Barroso is? Have you recently read about Jean-Claude Juncker preposition to the Greek government problems to refinance their debits?
Unfortunately we have to admit that the public interests for political issues is not extraordinarily high.
Europe has a dilemma. On one side it is probably the most important and attractive political vision which has been realized since 1989. More than 500 million people live and work in Europe, and 28 nations are proud to be a member of this alliance.
On the other side Europe is unpopular, complicated and not fully accepted. People often do not understand why the cooperation is necessary, there is no confidence if we do the right thing.
How can we solve this problem? There are several steps to consider:
First of all the European integration is not complete, there is still work to do. All of the questions are not answered yet. We just don´t know how to reform Europe to make it powerful for the next twenty or thirty years. To close any general debates about Europe's structure we need to answer open questions. The election in May and the British referendum in 2017 might be a considerable part of it.
Moreover we need to convince the young generation that the European allience is a positive one. Instead of rhetorical masterstrokes Europe demands reforms and backing, along with the motivation of young high education graduates to advertise Europe, to convince its residents to vote for Europe. Young people are our future – they will be ruling Europe soon and it is our responsibility to treat their heritage as careful as we can.
What else can we do? How can we make Europe more attractive for its habitants? Personally I believe the EU is attractive enough, because our values are significantly important for legislation and judge cases. The third step would be to advertise Europe, to explain and to show how important this process for our future is. Without the integration we wouldn´t live in peace – how simple is that?
