Campus Festival of Debrecen

Summer is the perfect season to have fun, and we can all agree with that. Summer is also quite hot, and days can be really tiring especially in Hungary, a country where the Winter is as cold as the summer is hot.

With a temperature that can reach up to 38° in the hottest days is not a wonder that citizens are going out of their houses especially in the very early morning or in the late afternoon, almost in the evening.

Well, what to do then in a place where the shops close at 6.30 p.m. and in a late pandemic world?

In Debrecen you can find a nice solution. For four days in the middle of summer it is possible to attend the second-largest festival in Hungary: the Campus Festival!

This Festival takes place in a section of the park near the great forest of the city, the area is the one near the local “Aquaticum”, the water park of the city, and comprehends the place where you can usually find the Water Tower: an hydric tower that supplies the city’s aqueduct and that has not only a wall for climbing but also a bar, a stage, a garden all around and a room where not only they host plays and parties but also conferences and expositions from time to time.

If you attend the Campus Festival you’ll realize how big of an event this is: not only it is possible to visit the water tower and even climb to the very top (with stairs! It is not needed to climb a wall.) but also to walk around in a beautiful green environment, follow the pedestrian road that will take you to the outside of the stadium and have a nice view from a higher level.

The Festival has to offer a lot: it will be possible to attend multiple concerts, in fact in 2021 was possible to find more than thirteen stages with different bands and singers, the whole festival was filled with stands where every food taste was satisfied! From meat to vegan plates, sweet, sour, and salty, beers, sweet drinks, or wine… you name it.

It was also possible to attend some events as the “Using Theater to Make Politics” hosted this year by the Hang-kèp association and with numerous and international participants coming from Romania, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Norway and Hungary, of course. It was also possible to participate in activities such as the juggling – learning that took place near the water tower thanks to the Ort-Iki Báb- és Utcaszínház association.

Campus Festival 2021 ended on 24 of July and due to the pandemic had to be rearranged a little from the previous years, but even if it was not as huge as it used to be, this was still a perfect place to spend some awesome nights. In the past this Festival hosted not only some great Hungarian artists but also great names of the music stage from all around the world!

It is possible to purchase a ticket for just one night or for the whole event, it is also possible to stay there for multiple nights thanks to the use of the camping that the festival provides.
