It’s been 10 months now since I started my Voluntary Service in the Czech Republic. Only one more to go. Feels like the perfect moment for a recap.

Small victories in learning a language from nothing, and remembering to celebrate these small successes rather than focusing on the frustration of not being able to verbally communicate fluently.

When talking to other volunteers, it quickly becomes clear that many young people share same passion and interest in mastering a language of the hosting country. Since I am one of them, I consider learning a new language an integral part of my learning progress during the next year. In this article, I would like to share my personal insights into learning and some techniques, which help me to succeed in this process.

Hearing 4 - 6 different languages every day sounds really confusing. Let me show you the bright sides of this mixture!

Imagine they put you in one room with 20 complete strangers. Just white chairs, whiteboards, some maps, markers, some blue cubes with a single letter on each, coffee, tea, water, Ikea cookies. That’s it. Nobody knows anybody. What do you do? I, for instance, become friends with them - not only on Facebook and Instagram, but also, wait for it, in real life. And you know what they call the situation when all other 20 people do the same thing and become friends with each other? They call it… EVS Seminar.
