“Summer break” from the greyness of Luxembourg
It's been a while since we have seen the sunlight here in Luxembourg. Long foggy and grey days past and I really needed to soak up some sunlight before the winter time is about to start. That's why I was glad to have the chance to escape, to take a little break from my EVS project and discover a different part of the world, the north of Africa. Its been the first time for me on this fascinating continent and I was really looking forward to this trip also because I was going to see a good friend of mine again, the first time after moving to Luxembourg. So it felt a bit like home even though „home“ was far away.
We decided to go Morocco. Actually, we were already thinking to go on a trip together in summer but the final decision to go to this very place we made just on the spur of the moment as we were looking for flights from several airports in our surroundings.
This was all we needed. Beautiful colours, the smell of spices and Moroccan tea, beautiful hand-woven carpets and other hand-crafted goods as well as lamps and a vast number of typical Moroccan decorative items. We were almost unable to cope with all these impressions especially the day we arrived but after the trip I can really say that our time in Morocco will leave some unforgettable memories even though their way of selling and bargaining can get a bit exhausting at some stage and the obvious gap between rich and poor which isn't always easy to deal with.
We've seen the famous square and market place Jemaa el-Fnaa and the spice market, tried delicious food (yaaaa couscous) and “Tajines”, visited palaces and an old tannery as well as the Jardin Majorelle and went on a day trip to the Ouzoud waterfalls in the northeast of Marrakesh. The bus journey to go there was already an adventure with incredible countrysides and vastnesses through the Atlas Mountains. From the rooftop of our Riad (which is a traditional accommodation in the Medina of Marrakesh) we could see the snow on top of the hills while we were sunbathing on the terrace at 30 degrees. What an incredible country. I am glad we decided to go there and I am sure after seeing the pictures you will completely understand what I am talking about.
