New law in Hungary ban LGBTQ+ representation under 18

On June 15 the Hungarian parliament approved a new anti LGBTQ+ propaganda in products for children under 18 years of age.

The idea seems to be to prevent the “promoting” of LGBTQ+ ideals and representation between all kids and teens; this decision is affecting not only television shows, books, tales but also marketing and publicity campaigns. In practical terms campaigns even of large companies such as Coca-Cola are forbidden to be seen by the public if they are in solidarity of the lgbtq+ minority, not only that but also a lot of movies and series which even only nominee or are referring to homosexuality may be forbidden for children.
Just think of a whole childhood deprived of amazing and breathtaking stories such as Harry Potter, Billy Elliott, Steven Universe, or a teen that cannot watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. or other products that can help them not only to recognize themselves in some characters but also to be able to empathize with other and developing social skills.

The law was boycotted from the opposition during the voting but still had enough votes to pass, and the official defense to justify it was “to protect children and prevent paedophilia” as Fidesz said.
 Luckily enough the legislation seems to harshly criticized  from the Council of Europe that condemned the bill as “misleading and false”. It also has several NGOs including Amnesty International; Lydia Gall –a senior researcher on Eastern EU Human Rights Watch- tweeted: “Associating paedophilia with LGBT people, banning comprehensive sexuality education and stifling free speech is despicable and unworthy of an EU member state.”
It is, in fact, a point to keep in mind that European countries have an accord that prevents human rights violation to happen, and this situation indeed seems to fall into said category; only the future will tell if this bill may be banned or not, but in the meanwhile associations all around Hungary are trying to make their voice louder, condemning this law and accusing the government to be insensitive and bigoted.
 
This Monday the European parliament’s LGBTI Intergroup described this legislation as a “Russian-style ‘propaganda law’”.
Up until now a total of 16 states in the 27 members of Europe have officially voiced their disapproval on the Hungarian law, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands lead the charge against the anti-LGBT position of the east European country. This discussion took place on Tuesday afternoon and taking a look behind the scenes of this consultation appeared that Denmark, Finland, Germany, France, Estonia, Spain, Lithuania, Sweden, Latvia and Ireland immediately put themselves against the law, later that day Italy add its name and the very next day also Greece and Austria joined the accusation.

What’s going to happen to this strong and harshly condemned Hungarian law? Only time can tell, in the meanwhile the LGBT community is still fighting and definitely is not remaining silent, reclaiming their rights and the rights of millions of children who should be able to approach different views and representations to better know themselves.
