ROMANIAN OBSSESION NO. 1 – CURTAINS
After six months of observing Romanians I found some phenomenons which seem weird form me first time. I tried to understand it and now I am much more familiar with it. Sometimes it is still funny for me, but at least I am not scared or with negative attitude to it.
I found courtains in places I would never expect to use them there for decoration. First time when I was surprised when the tram in Timisoara was crossing the square and I noticed there are curtains on the window of drivers space. No usual long, but just small size, anyway visible also from the longer distance.
Then I was for Xmas in small small village near Oraştie – Romoşel and during celebration in church – there it was! The curtains again. It was really strange for me as there were window-panes and curtains were long till the floor. There was also carpet on the floor. I can understand that church is for local community stg like „second home“ and they would like to pray in familiar environment.
And this week just during walking the town I crossed sex shop in a part of city with which I am not so familiar and guess what...? The curtains were also in shop window!
I was asking myself why do Romanians have this need to cover almost all the windows by curtains? Of course you can find here as well blinds or windows without anything. And the curtains represent for me my childhood and my grandparents house, where it was used in every window and also my grannie decorated by it shelves in a cabinet.
I think Romanians who love to use curtains also for public space (church, tram and window in sex shop) would like to manage feeling of home for other citizens.. Maybe I am wrong, but I am open for other explanations.
