Our Story in Uruguay
My summer in Uruguay
Until 2015 I had travelled in several places in Europe, but that year, almost accidentally I had the opportunity to travel much farther to South America, Uruguay in framework of a student exchange program. My initial worries originating from the great distance and the prejudice concerning public security in South America proved to be unfounded, no harm came to me and I had fun. Uruguay was comletely new for me, I could compare it mostly to the Mediterrean countries. I was impressed by the country's features, climathe, geographical location and culture, but what impressed me the most was how friendly and open-minded the people were. People enjoy life and by this I do not mean entertainment onely, but life in general. Their temperament is so much different from what I was used to in Hungary.
My host family looked after me with such kindness and love as if I were their own child, so I called and still call the head of family Papá. We travelled around in Uruguay, he showed me everything in Montevideo, acquianted me with their view of life, lifestyle and culture. Uruguayan Spanish is different from European Spanish and it was Papá who helped me the most to overcome the difficulties arising from this. He paid attention to my education, helped me to adapt to the community there and made sure I had fun and made many friends. He watched out for my mood, listened to me anytime, stood by me and supported me unconditionally.
He greatly contributed to my wonderful two months and I will never be able to thank him enough. I do hope that I can repeat these past experiences in the future and I can travel back to Papá's home country at least once more in my life. Papá and I have become real close, true friends. I can say that I will be grateful to him as long as I live. After I had arrived home, I missed him very much, so we talked a lot on the Internet.
During our conversation he did not mention that he would have some business to do and fly over to Europe in autumn. On 24th November, on my birthday he appeared at my doorstep out of blue and he congratulated me with Dulce de Leche because he knew that it was my favourit Uruguayan sweets.
