Living In A Fantasy
Life has been interesting - following up on the NBA season has got a nice touch to it, even with the pandemic still going strong.
For loads of people ‘’living in a fantasy’’ could mean daydreaming about stuff they really want to get or experience. Well, I’m kind of counted as one of them because I like imagining how my life could turn out after certain events in both good and bad ways. On the other hand, for me ‘’living in a fantasy’’ has a different meaning. Since December 22 I haven’t gone to sleep before 4am because the NBA returned to action. Seeing my favourite players take the court is a special feeling, but participation in my own NBA Fantasy league with my friends (shoutouts to my teammates from TJN – my beloved amateur basketball team) gives it a nice touch. One of my biggest dreams in life is owning a sports team – imagine the flex value of telling a person you meet ‘’well, I don’t do much, I own a sports team, that’s about it’’. Of course, I’m saying it as a joke but at the same time I wouldn’t be mad if I had a sports team of my own.
If you aren’t familiar with fantasy sports, here’s a quick explanation – you draft a team from real-life players in a major sports league through an app/webpage and throughout the season you compete with other players for the top spot in the league. The better your fantasy players perform in real life, the better your fantasy team performs in the league. To become good in a fantasy league people need to look at players in a deeper scale – not always the biggest names are the best ones to pick (Kelly Oubre, I truly apologise, but you ain’t good enough for my team). During the season people can trade players between each other to gain a competitive edge over others and also free agency is full of players available for picking.
Back to the subject – I have been following up on NBA action more than ever. All these sleepless nights are kind of worth it because I can learn the game of basketball, seeing different kinds of plays the teams like to run etc. We even created a group chat to communicate to each other during the season, and to see other guys paying this much attention on a virtual basketball fantasy world is quite a fun sight – trash talk is on a big level as well (Dani, pasveicini divnieci /Dani, say hi to the two (English translation) so we are having loads of fun during quarantine.
Keeping in touch with my teammates and other people I used to train with last season really helps me be motivated in life – seeing them training, putting the work in while no amateur sports is happening in Latvia is a great thing to experience. Safe to say that next season our team is heading for the championship, I just got to put the right pieces together so I don’t have to worry about me going 0/6 from the three in a crucial game.
In other news, COVID is still going strong and it doesn’t look like it’s gonna get better anytime soon. To be fair, mentally I was really close to calling it quits on the voluntary project because I came to Czech Republic to work with kids not look at the wall in my dorm room for 3 months on and off, but knowing the fact that I’m not the only one who needs to stay home and disance from the rest of the society, I decided that it’s better for me to go through it, put the work in where it’s needed and just go with the flow. It’s exhausting but in the long run I believe that it’s gonna help me a lot. Any experience is good experience if you want to learn new things, you know.
Of course, I can’t forget to mention the fact that it’s quite snowy (for my recent standarts) here in Ostrava and the city looks much better than it did before – maybe it’s just the snow. Well, it is the snow. If i had proper clothes and shoes for snowy times I’d build a bunch of snowmen wherever I can, even though I’m 24 years old and counting. I believe that you can’t be too old for playing in snow because it’s fun. Well, until it starts melting and you’re all wet.
I really can’t wait until I get to see people again though. Meeting people gives me a lot of energy and positivity in life, but now I can’t risk becoming COVID positive so I am doing a good deed and kind of isolating myself from the outside world.
That’s all I gotta say for now so yeah, I don’t know how to finish these things properly. Bye now!
