Living a life is like building a house
Life isn't about finding yourself. It's about creating yourself.
- George Bernard Shaw
Human life is a thing that arouses a lot of philosophical thoughts and allegorical associations. Some people say that it’s a road that we build in the direction we want or need. Others claim that it’s a book where we write our own stories. In my opinion a person is a house being in constant process of building during his lifetime.
Before I became a volunteer I couldn’t start the process of my house’s rejection. During 23 years of my life I was collecting materials for it. I grew up, finished school, graduated from the university and even worked, but somehow I couldn’t put together all the things I had. And it was EVS that helped me build it.
My house has a solid foundation – family and friends. Only being away from them for almost a year I realized what they really mean to me and saw who is a true friend, not a fair-weather one. If I didn’t do my EVS it could have probably taken many years for me to figure it out.
The walls of my house are strong. Being a volunteer, I not only helped children and taught them, but learned a crucial thing myself – to believe in me. Independence and self-reliance are the most valuable features for a person who does a voluntary year out of his so-called comfort zone. So coping with tasks, solving problems and experiencing new things I built the walls of my house on self-belief and optimism.
Large are my house’s windows. Living among different people, adjusting to a new culture I learned a lot. Travelling helped me see usual things in a new perspective, thus making me more tolerant and open-minded.
Thanks to my EVS year I’ve become mature and strong; I’ve built my house which I’ll be decorating and up-grading lifelong.
