Beginnings are never easy
It has been 3 months since I started my project.
Beginnings are never easy, just ask me. More than 2,000 km, two full suitcases and less than 3 weeks to plan my trip to Germany from Spain. That's how I could sum up the beginning of my volunteering in the European Solidarity Corps. As for many other volunteers, it has been a very fast 360º turn, full of mixed feelings, insecurities, questions and hope for this new chapter that opens in my life.
To begin with, you can imagine that planning something in such a short time can be a bit rushed, especially if you have never been to the country before and do not speak the language. In my case it was a bit of a shock at first, I had to get used to the change mentally and physically and it was not easy. In addition, a few days after my arrival, not yet adapted to my environment in the project and the city, I had to immerse myself directly in a one-week arrival training. Although the experience there was amazing, I was still not fully adapted.
On the other hand, getting used to the climate has not been as difficult as I thought it would be since I come from the north of Spain and have found the weather in the capital of Saxonia-Anhalt fine, but I always carry a pair of gloves and a scarf with me in case the weather gets cold. Although what I'm still trying to get used to is that it gets dark so early in winter... by 4 pm it's already completely dark!!!! And my head still assimilates the lack of light with going to sleep.
Lunch and dinner times can be completely different from the Spanish. For the first time in my life - for as long as I can remember - I have had dinner at 6 pm, when normally in Spain I usually have an afternoon snacks and dinner from 9 pm onwards. So sometimes getting used to this schedule has made me eat a lot of cheese and bread between meals at the beginning. But now everything is under control .
In addition, I came here without speaking a lick of German, only English. So you can easily imagine the amount of adventures and misunderstandings I'm going through in my day to day life trying to communicate with people.
The beginnings are not easy and you always encounter obstacles but little by little you overcome them. Three months ago I landed in Germany and I think now is the ideal time to start sharing with you how this adventure is going. Travels, food, curiosities, projects, nature, etc... are some of the blogs and reports that I will focus on during this year.
