7th YOUTH Contest "Foreign in Europe": And the winner is….

"Fremd ist man nur in einem Ort, in dem die eigene Träume, keine Chance haben um wahr zu werden"

2010 verkündete die deutsche Bundesregierung, dass 10.000 Roma, die seit Jahren, wenn nicht sogar Jahrzehnten in Deutschland wohnten, in den Kosovo abgeschoben werden. Die Kinder von Flüchtlingen, die in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen sind, wurden dabei in ein für sie fremdes Land abgeschoben. Denn sie hatten den Duldungsstatus von ihren Eltern bekommen. Meine Geschichte versucht nach zu empfinden, wie es sein muss, ein fremdes Land unfreiwillig als Heimat zu akzeptieren.

To me, foreign means three things; opportunities experiences and community. This short essay shows what the concept of being "foreign" means to me.

Ein Aufenthalt im Wechselbad der Gefühle.

Worin liegt der Sinn von Ländergrenzen? Sie mögen zwar Ordnung schaffen und Idendität stiften. Doch manche behandeln sie wie in Stein gemeißeltes Gesetzt, obwohl sie nichts anderes sin als willkürliche Linien auf Papier. Wie weit kann man diese fragwürdige Anhimmelung treiben? Absurd weit!

Als langjährige Freundinnen können wir von uns sagen, dass wir uns außerordentlich gut kennen. Wir sind einander so vertraut, dass wir die kulturellen Unterschiede zwischen uns einfach vergessen.
Mit diesem Text möchten wir uns mit einem Thema auseinandersetzen, das unter uns oftmals nicht angesprochen wird.

Excitement swelled up inside me like a balloon. I felt like an explorer who had just stumbled across a new land. Hamburg was new and exciting, with adventures waiting around every corner! Much the opposite of my small English town, the city loomed over me like a giant. My first adventure was to be from Borgweg to Gansemarkt. The U-Bahn seemed to be the most effective mode of transport. So I got on the U3 U-Bahn at Borgweg and off I went. However, due to copious amounts of excitement I managed to miss my stop at Berlinertor. And this was just the beginning…
