The results of the regionals and referendum in Italy

The regional elections ended with a draw between centre-left and centre-right: both sides won in three regions (while the counting of ballots has yet to begin in Valle d'Aosta). In the six regions the outgoing coalitions were reconfirmed (except in the case of the Marche region where the outgoing governor did not run again, but in any case won the opposite side).

The Democratic Party, in government since 2019, is the first Italian party in all the regions where it was voted, except Veneto and Liguria, and celebrated the results, especially because the polls had anticipated a very different perspective, i.e. they gave both Tuscany and Puglia in the balance. "The team, the community, the passion that we all put into it won," said secretary Nicola Zingaretti, who also interpreted the local vote as an encouraging sign for the government that has been in office for over a year.

The results of the 5 Star Movement, on the other hand, were particularly negative. The party, which has governed since 2018 with two different coalitions, has presented itself with an autonomous list in almost all the regions and has achieved disappointing results: it reached over 10% only in Campania and almost 10% in Puglia. Some deputies of the Movement spoke of "disaster", Vice-Minister Stefano Buffagni admitted: "Wrong choices, we need to review many things". Immediately, in the "next few days", assured the regent political leader Vito Crimi, the states-general will start the path, which "will lead us to determine new and more ambitious objectives".

Both in Tuscany and Puglia, the candidates of the Movement have obtained half the votes compared to a year ago. A good part of these votes were decisive in making the candidates of the PD, Eugenio Giani and Michele Emiliano win. It is not yet clear what the effects of this change in the balance of the governing coalition will be. Still among the majority parties, the result of Italia viva, Matteo Renzi's party that in Tuscany collected 4.4%, while it expected to reach 10%, was disappointing. In other regions such as Puglia, where he presented one of his candidates, he collected only 1.4% of the votes.

Referendum

The 'yes' vote won in the constitutional referendum of 20 and 21 September 2020 on cutting the number of parliamentarians. The 'yes' vote was almost 70% (69.5% to be precise), the 'no' vote just over 30% (30.4%).

The yes vote implies the amendment of Articles 56 and 57 of the Constitution, according to the law voted by Parliament (with 4 different votes, and two different majorities). 

The number of deputies will therefore increase from the current 630 to 400, that of senators elected from 315 to 200, including members elected abroad (8 deputies against the current 12 and 4 senators against the current 6).
