My host family.
“A ‘normal’ family which opens its door to experience a new culture and gives student a second home.”
I already feel like home. My host family is so lovely. I thought it would take me sometime to communicate freely with them - without any anxiety. Ok, tbh sometimes I’m holding back, because you just don’t want to say anything wrong, that would or could be inappropriate, but all in all, I don’t feel like I have to really say anything that I don’t want to say or wear a mask to make them “like” me. I actually have one thing in common with both of my host parents. My host dad sings in a choir and sometimes he just plays the piano, while I sing Adele songs to it (because apparently they love her, which is quite cool). And I played labyrinth with my host mom yesterday. She won.. but that’s hopefully the last time, because I don’t like taking the L-spot.. ;) They really want me to feel very comfortable over here. Especially because I’m vegan, I thought this would be a barrier while living in a host family, but apparently it isn’t. My host mom even got me a vegan pizza from Waitrose the other day or even today. So there’s one thing I want to try out throughout my year in England with my host fam: I started a “game” or better “challenge“ where I give them riddles or quiz‘ to solve for the day. I’ll try to get a white board, so that while I’m away or otherwise preoccupied, they can try to solve them when they are home or bored. The one that gets the most points after my year, will get a present. But ONLY the one.. I already have some things in mind what I could get the winner, but that will stay a secret for now. I just want us to have something that keeps us connected even though we aren’t together the whole time. So today the son of my host parents came by briefly and the sister from my host dad had dinner with us. When she met me, she thought I’d be the girlfriend of their son, which was pretty funny but awkward at the same time. But good that he left shortly before she mentioned that. That would’ve been moreeeee awkward. But I think we are all getting along. I like this family! I’m learning lots of new stuff from them too! Apparently the Queen is not really involved in any political matters, which I didn’t know before, so I’m getting educated as well. I guess I need a bit of knowledge concerning this country lol.
