A week in my life - Mondays
The attempt to finally make clear what I´m doing as a volunteer in Czech Republic
It´s been a while since I wrote my last blog entry. A lot has happened since then. Actually, a lot is happenning every month, every week, every day. That´s also the reason why I don´t have time to do a lot of things I used to do back in Germany. For example answering all text messages on time or watching You Tube videos for hours. Or writing this blog regularly. Many people don´t understand how I can be so busy. Many people actually don´t even understand what I´m doing here in Czech Republic in general. They don´t understand how someone could voluntarily leave a country like Germany to move into a country like Czech Republic.
So in this blog entry, I would like to show all those people ( and of course also those who are just interested) how my new life in this country looks like. And I want to proof all those people wrong who couldn´t imagine that I would be way happier in this totally "irrelevant, tiny, poor and uneducated country full of alcoholics and jerks".
So let´s start with the good old monday morning. Like any normal worker, I get up early, eat my cereals out of my cooking pot, brush my teeth and take a shower. Like any normal worker, I usually forget the time at some point or fall back in a heavenly deep sleep. And like any normal worker, I need to run over all the red traffic lights and dye at least five times to catch my tram in the last second.
When I get off my tram in the middle of nowhere, the next challenge on this monday morning is already waiting for me: The mountain. So still half asleep, I drag myself all the way up to the office. After this brilliant athletic performance, I just exhaustedly fall into my big, black office chair and drink a few drops of the water of life out of my most loyal compagnion, my navy blue Nalgene bottle (* which by the way is meanwhile honoured with a " 100% Czech Republic" sticker).
So after I´m regenerated, I can finally pull out my laptop and start working. So what does my work at the office looks like? - It can be basically anything. From preparing buttons for various occasions, searching comic pictures for the "map of competences" and preparing envelopes with volunteering agreements to despairing about searching topics for a 90 minutes conversation ( -I´m always open for ideas by the way).
So after I survived the - in the end not so terrible but actually pretty chilled - monday morning, it´s time to change the work place, reactivate my muscles and walk to the school club of a local primary school. After managing to sucessfully reach the school and enter the building (- not possible when it´s again power breakdown in the whole area-), all your efforts will be rewarded by a happy "Dobry den!" out of the mouths of 10-20 children. In the following, a lot of singing ( especially christmas songs), dancing, group games and little activities in English, the moment has come: Everybody will get their last bonbon for a correct English word out of the big blue jar, put his jacket and shoes on and get ready for the highlight of a regular monday afternoon in the school club: The park.
And if you now imagine that I would run to the whole park in order to animate the children, you are wrong. Instead , I´m just sitting on a bench with the teacher and the other volunteer and talk about random stuff. So all in all I can say that the time in the school club passes usually really fast.
In the aftermath, on hour of layover is waiting for me. At this time, you can just find me sitting at the tram stop, eating some bananas and dry bred - because I´m usually to lazy to prepare myself a tasty meal - thinking about my life ( sometimes I´m also doing something productive like learning Czech) . So when my trolleybus finally arrives, on monday afternoons I´m driving through the whole city to go to the language school. This 90 minutes of conversation in german then are finally the end of my first day of the week ( - which is also the longest-).
